Follow your heart.

I gripped the slip of paper in my sweaty right hand as I watched Gerard set up the table for the séance in the café area of Neptune’s World. It was the only place we could find a round table big enough to put everyone around it, and it was in a central area in case something happened. I didn’t know what they meant by “something,” but after everything, I was sure they were thinking of bad things.

The wolf guards watched the proceedings with frowns on their faces and their eyebrows pinched together. I saw how they worked together, changing out shifts for the ones that guarded every entrance. I saw their discomfort at the thought of dealing with the supernatural.

“This should be an adventure,” a familiar voice murmured next to me.

I turned to look up at Ryan. “I was beginning to think you weren’t going to show up.” Especially since he had disappeared so abruptly after our chat on the steps outside.

He shrugged. “I always keep my promises.”

“Okay,” I said, nodding to the table. “Promise me that I’ll make it back from this.”

He raised an eyebrow curiously. “What makes you think you won’t make it back?”

“I just have a feeling,” I said. And when he didn’t comment further, the pit in my stomach grew heavier. He wasn’t promising…Damn, he wasn’t promising.

“Relax,” he sighed. “I promise you’ll make it back. You’ve got this.”

I let out the breath I’d been holding and closed my eyes. “Thank you.” And when I turned back, I noticed that Valerie, the big werewolf from earlier, was watching me with a disapproving expression on her face. “It looks like the werewolves don’t believe in ghosts,” I muttered.

“Well, maybe they can star in their own romance novel someday.”

I snickered and then promptly jumped when I felt the feathery touch on my shoulder. Christine stood next to me, blinking rapidly as she had just frightened the daylights out of me.

“Hey, Lita?” she asked. “We’re ready for you.”

I licked my lips and tucked the fortune away in my jeans pocket. This was it. This made this whole thing real. Everything stemmed from this moment.

I nodded. “Okay.”

I didn’t sound as strong as I’d hoped.

Everyone stood up around the table, their chairs pushed in. They watched me expectantly as I walked up with Christine and Ryan. I couldn’t help but feel like this was a kind of funeral. My funeral.

I looked around at them. At Gerard, Margaret, Jordyn, Luke, Abby, Tara, Alaina, Sara, Colton. And then there was us as we joined them.

Gerard grinned at me, his eyes shining as much as his diamond-stud earrings. “Let’s begin,” he said.

As one unit, we all sat in our chairs, the legs scraping against the floor as we scooted ourselves in. Gerard reached to the center of the table and lit the four candles. With every passing second, I felt more and more numb.

I can’t believe I’m doing this. Again.

“Take everyone’s hand,” Gerard commanded. “Let us complete the circle.”

Christine and I were
